This custom round pen was just shipped to Kansas.  It consists of 2 x 8” board siding and 2” x .120 square steel tubing.  The Pen is 70’ in diameter, with a 6’ tall 10” offset slanted main pen and a 2’ Pro top.  The gate is slanted with the pen but opens up level with the ground!  Our customers love our pro-round pens, safer for horse and rider and keeps sand where it belongs… in the pen! Steel Prices are on the Rise.. Like it or not!  So are you only doing something structural?  Bollards? Piling? Fencing? Gate posts? Expect Steel prices to be set on more of a quarterly type basis, meaning they will be more volatile then previous years.  As prices continue to climb, we again are warned that increases within the next week could reach 7%.  It feels as though steel pricing is not tied to demand and supply anymore!  We all seem to feel no demand but then we are feeling shortages in supply.  Those shortages are coming from lack of confidence in the market for future business.  It would seem the steel mills are not rolling inventory, if they can help it.  What is ordered is whats produced, causing shortages  in some areas especially as customers try to work on just-in-time inventories.  Seems each guy in the chain is trying not to stock up so you pay the price asked when you need the product - as most of us should if we only buy in small quantities. Now combine that with Trucking being in short supply…. The last trucking disaster caused many of the small drivers to drop from the picture leaving a shortage in the market for trucks.  Combine this with rising fuel prices and this equals increased transportation costs… So if you need small quantities now and quick – expect to pay.  We wish we could project out our business for the next 6 months but no one seems to be able to do that… We all agree it is getting better, but its a slow process.  So how do you plan your inventories to keep your customer base happy?  Conservatively!   The good news from an interesting article by Ed Lotterman states “One should also recognize that the long-run inflation-adjusted price of steel, just as of many primary commodities like corn and wheat, has drifted downward over time.  It varies by type of steel, but most common grades cost less than half as much in inflation-adjusted terms as they did 40 years ago.  Steel still is cheap in the long run terms, even if demand from Asia is pushing it up from the doldrums of the end of the last century.”  So cheer up folks, Steel is actually getting cheaper!  Your dollar is just getting weaker!

Here is a question we get asked several times a weeek…Do yo have something with an inside diameter of ………….?  Just to clarify, most pipe is what the industry calls “nominal,” meaning that it is  “about” a certain diameter inside.  The outside diameter remains consistent and the inside diameter changes with wall thickness.  To compound the issue, you can have a variance in the wall that is acceptable in the industry of + or – around 12% , so if you are looking for something with an exact inside diameter, we can provide that, but typically it must be machined.  If you are looking for a sleeve to go over something and you are requiring a minimum inside diameter with acceptable tolerances to sleeve snuggly, we may be able to match something up.  This is a question we handle daily and the best thing to do is to describe what you are attempting to do and we can suggest something that will meet your needs.  Check us out at www.libertypipe.com

With fuel prices on the rise, freight rates are going up.  We are hearing that by mid summer there will be charges in excess of $3.00 per mile.  How does this affect you?  Higher rates mean greater cost of goods resulting in higher prices to the end consumer to try and cover some of the additional costs.  If you are in need of any items that require shipping by truck now is a good time to buy.
